THE ANSWER

RAISE A LITTLE HELL

NAPALM RECORDS

MARCH 6 2015

In 2013 The Rockpit made the assertion that The Answer’s last album ‘New Horizons’ was proof that “Real Rock and Roll is alive and kicking”. The problem we have now is that ‘Raise a Little Hell’ tops even that release. For the Answer it has always been a case of pushing forwards and ‘Raise a Little Hell’ continues that progress…

‘Long Live the Renegades’ is already many months old – recorded in Madrid in May 2014, like the rest of the album, the band has now been living with this next chapter for the best part of a year such is the way of the industry in 2015. Some of the songs have even been road-tested live and gone down as you might expect – a storm. As a track to open The Answer’s fifth release it could barely get better – sheer soulful Hard Rock with that wonderful dab of the Blues and echoes of  the greats like Thin Lizzy: it’s in short more than you would hope for and all you could expect from one of the most consistent bands of the last decade.

Sonically ‘The Other Side’ is exactly what you want to follow an opening like that – a more contemplative rocker, after a slow-build, the same brooding energy is there and a huge riff to hang it all off to boot, so far so much depth…

‘Aristocrat’ on the other hand is sheer fun, from the first echoes of guitar to the huge building groove, swirling backing vocals and tongue-in-cheek lyrics; not to mention to great harp and solo. ‘Cigarettes and Regret’ cements a great opening volley with a song that smoulders and takes the mood and pace down to ballad territory with a huge uplifting refrain and great vocal.

‘Last Days of Summer’ which is one of the four songs the band has already previewed live is all you want The Answer to be: a dirty building blues hard rock groove with a Zeppelinesque quality to it that pushes you forward on a fat wave. It’s brooding, its sheers Blues-apocrypha and one of the real peaks here!

‘Strange Kinda’ Nothing’, another song that has already been outed live, means you reach the midway point without taking a breath. It’s another light moment underpinned with a plaintive vocal and acoustic guitar, before growing before your ears into a beautifully-crafted paean to lost love. Kicking us back into high gear ‘I Am What I Am’ chugs and rattles back into 70’s rock territory with a huge sing-along chorus crying out to be thrown back at the band live from the audience. ‘Whiplash’ comes as a hard rocking call to arms, buzzing in and kicking hard; ‘Gone Too Long’ by contrast sets out exactly what The Answer do so well – mid tempo rock songs that are both immediate and have sufficient depth to stay with you.

The closing three songs amazingly hold up the quality, this is an album shot through with that word like a stick of Blackpool rock. The Answer is a band that sound both comfortable, assured and at times intricate, without being self-indulgent and have managed to create an album that is both timeless and immediate and yet still deep enough to reveal that there are so many layers to this band, that God-willing we will get to enjoy more of long into the future.

‘Red’ leads us out with swagger and stomp, like you expect of bands like Aerosmith; ‘I Am Cured’ leads in with slide guitar and blossoms into a solid hard rocking gem with swampy overtones; whilst title track and closer ‘Raise A Little Hell’ has a monumental riff that stutters and grooves its way into your brain.

If this is just a sample of the ‘Hell’ The Answer can raise we want more…
