STATUS QUO - AQUOSTIC STRIPPED BARE

RHINO/WARNERS RECORDS

OCTOBER 17 2014

31 albums in its hard to believe that Quo has never put out an acoustic, sorry ‘Aquostic’, album even at the heights of MTV’s obsession with the concept, but after reforming the original line-up I guess this was the next logical place to go…

So here it is – an album that not only re-treads some of the classics, but also takes a look at some of their lesser-known tunes. It’s not a light-weight undertaking either with 24 tracks – and almost all (except of course ‘Marguerita Time’) of them sure to fire up the denim-clad Boogie brigade.

Starting where it all began with ‘Pictures of Matchstick Men’, here augmented with strings (as many of the songs here are) Quo is off to a great start that doesn’t let up with the almost as old ‘Down the Dustpipe’.

Where the album really comes to life though is with the early 70’s fare:  and particularly the tongue-in-cheek treatment some of the ‘untouchable’ 12-Gold Bars tracks get. With the entire Side One getting an airing and a few choice cuts from Side Two – tracks like ‘Paper Plane’ and the swamp-blues swing of ‘Down Down’ (Which almost makes you forgive them the sell-out to an Australian Supermarket giant recently) work wonderfully well. Lesser-known tunes like ‘Softer Ride’ and ‘It’s Better Now’ also manage to shine.

Tracks like ‘Don’t Drive My Car’ and ‘Caroline’ work so well you find yourself looking back to the originals again.  The thing you most take away from Aquostic though is the sense of humour that Quo always had, and despite people like myself always hankering for the seventies catalogue, like the reformation of the ‘Frantic Four’ this is yet another splendid offering from the band and at 24 tracks great value for money.

Listen to ‘Whatever You Want’; ‘Again and Again’ and Rain’ and tell me it isn’t so…
