SMOKIN MIRRORS SET TO IGNITE EP REVIEW 2013

SMOKIN' MIRRORS - SET TO IGNITE

SELF-RELEASED

DECEMBER 2013

This four track EP from female-fronted Sydney four-piece Smokin’ Mirrors shows a lot of promise. If you hanker after a sound that would sit perfectly comfortably at the end of the eighties, with a modern edge supplied by a solid female vocal then the songs here are strong enough to suggest the band might be onto something.

This is high-energy, melodic, guitar driven music with a ton of attitude, and tracks like ‘Set to Inite’ and ‘State of the Mind’ are sure to sound good live. If there is one slight criticism though it’s that the EP is largely one-paced and while that suits the band fine (the songs are great) it’s always nice on an EP to see the possibilities for a full length. So by ‘Not in My Way’ (which inexplicably seems to cut out at 3:03 half way through what sounded like a blistering solo) you just hanker for a change of pace.

That change comes in the slower ‘Wasted’ (which again cuts out before the end at 3:23, making you bemoan the fact that so few bands now send physical product out – 2 tracks out of 4 cutting out like that really isn’t good enough). ‘Wasted’ we had kind of hoped would be the out-of-the-park high speed demolition session, but which instead is a slower number. It’s a nice song and has some great changes and wonderful guitar but somehow it falls short of setting you on fire.

Smokin’ Mirrors on the basis of this initial EP has a lot going for them, it’s a great EP despite the issues with the download and we’d love to hear more.
