Ronnie James Dio was one of the greatest voices in Hard Rock, and a man that inspired generations through the music he made especially with Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his band Dio. This compilation is a fitting tribute to the man, collecting as it does predominantly unreleased cover-versions of his work by some of the real heavy weights of rock.

To celebrate Ronnie’s work an all-star group of fans and friends got together to record the 13 tracks that are featured here, and there are big names too – with Metallica, Motorhead, The Scorpions, Anthrax and Rob Halford all putting in.

Pulling tracks from every stage of Dio’s career there’s plenty of Rainbow represented best perhaps by the ‘Ronnie Rising Medley’ by Metallica that takes in classics like “A Light In The Black,” “Tarot Woman,” “Stargazer,” and “Kill The King.” For us though it’s either Motörhead and Biff from Saxon’s take on “Starstruck” or  frequent Dio collaborators Vinny Appice, Doug Aldrich, Jeff Pilson, and Scott Warren’s version of “The Man On The Silver Mountain” that takes the prize. Few though surely could go past Glenn Hughes’ version of “Catch the Rainbow” even if it is arguably a lesser known song from Rainbow’s 1975 debut.

Ronnie of course was for me also the voice of Sabbath after years of Ozzy’s caterwauls and here “Neon Knights” and “The Mob Rules” get great faithful versions by Anthrax and Adrenaline Mob.

Dio, the band gets a fair look in too, though predominately its tracks from the classic Holy Diver that gets the treatment. Our pick of those tracks would have to be Corey Taylor’s stunning take on “Rainbow in the Dark” surely one of Ronnie’s finest songs. Though both Doro’s and Halestorm’s contributions take some beating too.

Fittingly the last and fourteenth track sees Ronnie himself performing “This Is Your Life” a song that originally released on the ‘Angry Machines’ album and one which here is performed with just voice and piano.

It’s hard to believe it’s almost four years now we lost Ronnie and so if you, like us miss the man like Hell, play this loud and through buying it know you are helping the Foundation set up in his name to fight cancer.

Note: The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, co-founded by Wendy Dio, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable fund dedicated to supporting cancer-prevention research, raising awareness and educating the public about the vital importance of early detection and prevention when dealing with this deadly disease.
