RETCONSTRUCT - DENIZENS OF THE DEPTHS

PAVEMENT ENTERTAINMENT

MAY 27 2014

Modern Gothic Rock that draws on some of that genres deepest darkest recesses. Retconstruct reminds me at times of early Goth bands like Sex Gang Children especially with the driving rhythms, largely up-tempo songs and especially the vocals. As such it’s not your usual Goth-Industrial plodder but rather a well-crafted, atmospheric and subtle, yet dark creation.

Tracks like ‘Gods Among Men’ with their heavy chug are just the tip of the black iceberg; ably supported by songs like ‘Funeral Dawn’ which starts out like a Nephilim dirge before kicking into higher gear and a primal chant scarred by guitars.

Some of the best here include the simple almost Goth-Trance of ‘Hounds of Hell’ and the primal and delicate ‘Ravage of Ages’ which builds into a dark delight.

Our pick of what is a great collection would probably be ‘Ravage of Angels’ along with the disturbing ‘Storm the Castle’ and the powerful burst of ‘Celebration in Eschaton’.
