POP WILL EAT ITSELF

THE ROSMOUNT HOTEL, PERTH AUSTRALIA

AUGUST 31 2014

It may be 20 years since PWEI last visited our shores and the band may be very different to those that last set foot on stage back then, but despite the self-proclaimed jetlag and lack of the big visual accompaniment you might associate with the Poppies it’s clear that tonight it’s all about the love and the fun.

Tonight at the Rosemount Hotel it’s clear from the off that the poppies own the crowd and it’s equally clear from the response (despite a rather slow creep closer to the stage over the course of the night) that the crowd loves the Poppies. It’s the sort of perfect storm of a gig where the huge expectation is completely met and pretty much from the off.

Since 2011’s reformation which sees original member Graham Crabb joined by Mary Byker fronting the band the poppies have been tearing up stages home and away often with the sort of visuals you would expect from watching too many of their videos. So tonight’s show at the Rosemount is interesting as all of that of course is stripped away and all we have is the guys on stage and the music.

If you are looking for a spot of nostalgia or just a band that is truly original and eschews genres then PWEI is that band and judging by the eclectic mix of the crowd – from hardened old punks to electro-funksters, leather-jacketed rockers and members of a hundred other scenes, everyone is welcome.

On stage of course there is plenty of jumping from our two vocalists, plenty of witty banter with the crowd from Graham and a thousand rock star poses from dreadlocked bassist Davey Bennett. Musically despite the long trip from the UK to Perth it’s tight as a drum.

As primarily a singles band PWEI have so many moments of glory in their catalogue it’s hard to play favourites but the setlist tonight manages that rare feat of even introducing new music from latest album ‘New Noise Designed by a sadist’ like ‘Back 2 business’ and ‘Chaos and Mayhem’ without disturbing the flow or losing a single punter and that pretty much says it all really.

Essentially though the night was all about the hits with all the hits and they are all there with classics like ‘Wise Up Sucker’ getting an early outing and ‘Ich Bin Ein Auslander’ getting one of the biggest roars of the night. Before they cap it off with the unmissable and intensely infectious ‘Def Con One’ before putting on the Guy Fawkes masks for their take on The Prodigy’s ‘Their law’ which threatens to raise the roof.

I don’t think I’ll have as much fun as this at a gig all year, and no one here left disappointed. If you like it high energy this is a must see if you are over east or in NZ. Long live the Poppies and come back soon…
