PUNK GOES 90S VOL 2 various Artists Review 2014

MARCH 28 2014

As covers CDs go this starts off in the best possible way before the wrapper even comes off, with a track-listing of songs you really want to hear. Following on the heels of Vol. 1 back in 2006 you could argue that this instalment is even better.

Punk Goes 90s Vol. 2 features covers from some of the best Pop-Rock, Metalcore and Hardcore acts from today and each adds their own slant on songs that should already be in your collection. Featuring 12 unreleased recordings it’s a case of who’s who and who covers what, but there’s not a dud cover on here even if a couple of the track selections might not exactly strike you as classic cover material – but that you’ll find is where you’re wrong with even rapper Coolio’s ‘Gansta’s Paradise’ taking a rock beating at the hands of Falling in Reverse.

Elsewhere the 90’s hits are tacked by heavy-hitters in their own right: like Mayday Parade, Asking Alexandria, Yellowcard, Breathe Carolina and Motionless in White. Some of our favourites are the more obvious tracks like the wonderful cover of ‘Closer’ originally by Nine Inch Nails and covered here by Asking Alexandria, who to be fair have a history of great reinterpretations of other band’s songs. Still it’s probably our favourite here.

Other covers that really stood out were Memphis May Fire’s cool take on STP’s ‘Interstate Love Song which shows due deference to the original while rocking the hell out of it at breakneck speed, and also Yellowcard’s take on The Pumpkins’ ‘Today’ that again shows that a great song can take subtle variation just as easily as it can radical reinterpretation…

A great album well worth investigating whether you’re a fan of the artists here or the originals.
