PELICAN LIVE AT THE ROSEMOUNT HOTEL PERTH REVIEW 2014

PELICAN

THE ROSEMOUNT HOTEL,PERTH WA

JULY 27 2014

Post-rock instrumentalists Pelican can be described as a heavy but melodic and sometimes mellow kind of band. Not too heavy mind you but enough to make your head bob up and down and even a few headbangers as we saw on Sunday night in Perth at their last show on the Australian tour.

Opening up were local bands Foxes and Chaos Divine, the later who have been making some steady ground in their successful rise so it was no surprise to see them opening this show. Pelican made their way out at an early time (due to venue curfew) to a fairly decent sized crowd and the band made no delays in getting right down to it. Relying mostly on their latest album "Forever Becoming", the band sounded great and crystal clear and much heavier live than on their recordings. That's usually true in most cases and Pelican are certaintly no exception, the heavier doom aspects coming across much more intense.

The 2 guitarists Trevor de Brauw and newer member Dallas Thomas trading off with each other on riffs and solo parts were fantastic to see as was Bryan Herweg on bass who stood his ground in the middle the whole night and giving the band some serious backbone to the sound. The build ups that the band generate from mellower parts into heavier louder sections was something that is a big part of their style but the newer material definitely seemed more to the point in some ways which is also a good thing. But I think there is something to be said about instrumental music and having vast ranges of dynamics in individual songs which gives the heavier sections even more power.

Final encore song was the epic "Mammoth" which got the biggest reaction from the fans on the night. However unfortunately the song was cut midway due to some kind of power failure. It may have crossed the mind of a few of the possibility of the show being cut due to curfew rules which would not be the first time that has happened in Perth but looking at the time which was at least 15 minutes before their scheduled finish time, we hope that was not the case. Much to the disappointment of the band and to the fans, the show ended right there but it was a minor flaw in an otherwise solid night of heavy rock.
