MR BIG - STORIES WE COULD TELL

FRONTIERS RECORDS

SEPTEMBER 26 2014

The thing is about bands like Mr Big is that they are always remembered primarily for the songs that ruled the airways and dominated MTV back in the day, but that of course is only part of the story and rather disconcerting. Mr Big was always a band that never quite made it to that top level and as such they never really got the attention their output really deserved.

Here we have their eighth album, featuring the original line up that gave us their impressive reformation platter ‘What If?’ a couple of years back, and you know what? This is just as good if not better than that release. Built on a solid foundation of blues-rock this is an album with grooves so deep you fear they will cut right through…

If you want an album that grabs you by the scruff of the neck from the off and refuses to loosen the grip then ‘Stories…’ is it: ‘Gotta Love the Ride’ has all the power you could wish for, a great groove and a chorus to haunt you to boot: and it’s only the start. Charting the highpoints on an album like this is of course a thankless task as everything here more than passes muster, but if we have to stick that tightly-gripped neck out then try the passionate and bluesy ‘Fragile’; the hard rocking ‘Satisfied’; the genius ballad ‘The Man Who Has Everything’ or the acoustic led ‘East/West’ that just bursts into life before rocking out.

In short this is so good it brings a huge shit-eating grin to your face. Mr Big just gets better with age. This is an album you must add to your collection.
