MANES TEETH TOES AND OTHER TRINKETS ALBUM REVIEW 2014

MANES - TEETH, TOES AND OTHER TRINKETS

DARKYRA BLACK

FEBRUARY 20 2014

Alt-Rock dripping with vintage Bowie and Peter Murphy-like moments make Manes pretty much essential listening for fans of the hypnotic art-rock dark sway of such artists. Add to that some arty lyrics about ‘Red Eagles carrying prayers to the sky’ and you have an ambient swirling noise that will entrance you.

As the press release tells you "Teeth, Toes and Other Trinkets" is actually an anthology of 11 unreleased, obscure and hard-to-find tracks / alternate versions culled from the verdant Manes archives. Dating back to the periods of their stellar "Vilosophe" and "How The World Came To An End" full-lengths from 2003 and 2007 respectively” and it’s a pleasure to hear. If like me you are new to the band it’s a revelation!

Look out for tracks like ‘Blanket of Ashes’ (opener and our favourite); the delicate, dream-like extolling ‘Ease Yourself Back (Into Consciousness)’; or the languid beauty of ‘Tzolv’. This album it seems is also a precursor for new material and I for one will be waiting eagerly to hear it.

Current line-up:

Tor-Helge Skei - guitars, computers
Eivind Fjøseide - guitars
Torstein Parelius - bass, lyrics, visuals
Rune Hemsnes - drums
Asgeir Hatlen - vocals
