MAIDS EP REVIEW 2014

MAIDS - (EP)

SELF-RELEASED

SEPTEMBER 7 2013

Maids are purveyors of powerful heavy alt-indie rock and this; the debut EP from the Newcastle (Australia) quartet is full of dirty beats, loud guitars and intriguing vocals.

If you like your rock with a scuffed edge and a little insanity then this will hit the spot nicely. Opening with the mad yet musically grounded ‘Dr. Gecko’ things get progressively stranger and all the more beguiling. It’s hard as a listener to imagine what these guys do in the ‘live’ arena but you can taste  a certain energy.

Oddly the single “Mechanism’ is our least favourite track here with “green’ and “I’m Afraid’ more our kind of madness. Imagine The Stooges were The Strokes with Nick Cave on fronting and you’ll sort of get it! This EP is at times heavy and aggressive at other times it gazes at its shoes before getting all psychedelic on us, but its real strength is the spark of originality that the guys keep burning till the end. This could all end up very interesting!
