LORD DYING POISONED ALTARS ALBUM REVIEW 2014

LORD DYING - POISONED ALTARS

RELAPSE RECORDS

JANUARY 27 2015

Hailing from the North West U.S. in Portland, doom sludge metallers Lord Dying have only been around for a few years but all the members have been around for a number of years playing music in various other bands. "Poisoned Altars" is this band's second album and the experience shows in the quality of the music that you can hear in the songs.

The title track cranks out at the beginning with a short but catchy tune. "The Cleaning At The End Of The Path" has a slower doomy groove which swtiches gears midway with a bit of guitar playing and instrumentalisation before switching back to the first half's doomy groove again. 'A wound Outside Of Time" is more tempo with a nice memorable riff, frontman Erik Olson leading the way in this short track. A highlight of the album is addictive and catchy "An Open Sore" which reminds me of Down's early records. A guest appearance from Joel Grind of Toxic Holocaust fame is found on the humerously titled "

Suckling at the Teat of a She-Beast" where he provides some backing vocals. It starts out as a Toxic Holocaust type thrasher but quickly turns into a nice groove that is fairly aggressive in it's sound. The album finishes off with one of the more heavier tracks in "Darkness Remains" which has a killer solo section midway that shows another side of Lord Dying.

If you love the sludgey, doom type stuff, Lord Dying is a band to check out. With their second album done and proven to be a solid sophomore effort, 2015 could be a great year for this band.
