LEGS ELECTRIC - THE GIRLS' GOT RHYTHM

The best thing about the multiple band bills you get at launches like this is the unexpected and tonight was no exception with newcomers ‘Maverick’ playing their first ever show. Sadly we didn’t get to see their full set, but catching the tail end of the set we heard a lot we liked – and if your thing is the heavier end of the Blues Rock bands like the Black Crowes and Bad Company did so well, then this is a band to watch. Add to that some memorable songs, a great vocal and some thrusting guitars and Perth has a new name to watch out for.

When a bill also boasts not just one but two of Perth’s best rock bands in support of the main act you know you are onto a winner. By the time Hailmary took to the stage the Rosemount was already filling up and the band that have a new EP out now, mixed the old and the new with tracks both from their first release and their latest.

Hailmary’s distinctive blend of heavy grunge has long made them a Perth favourite on the local Hard Rock scene, and tonight saw a relatively short set at full pace from start to finish. In a set that featured both ‘Everything is Possible’ and the wonderful EP closer ‘My Song1’, the band who are just about to set off on a National tour, let everyone know in no uncertain terms that the best may well be still to come.

The Floors are of course an entirely different proposition, and it’s been a while since we saw them at their own album launch at the tail end of 2012. It’s been too long quite clearly because as soon as that dirty, fuzzy punk blues kicks in you are hooked. While the eclectic mix of supports might not work for everyone for some of us in the crowd it’s all that’s right with Perth heavy music at the minute.

Of course what we were all here for was Legs Electric and the launch of their first EP (reviewed this week at www.therockpit.net) and the anticipation in the crowd tonight is palpable, as was the level of excitement from the band themselves before the show, with Ama excitedly telling me that tonight was really the culmination of two years hard work for the band before the show and Laura equally fired up before the set.
After a brief intro tape it’s time for ‘Maximum Rock ‘N’ Roll’ as their tagline goes.

What hits you most immediately when Legs Electric hit the stage is how tight they sound, and it’s no surprise I guess with the backline of the sisters Soanes playing together in their previous band along with Laura for so long. Opening number ‘Illicit Love’ which is also the first track on their EP lays it all down: and we’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – is there a finer female voice in Perth than Ama Quinsee? We think not.

Legs Electric, for the uninitiated, is your quintessential Blues-infused Hard Rock band. Take a little of the 70’s swagger of greats like The Stones, Lizzy  and Zep and mix that in with some harder eighties rock like the Gunners and there you have it – all girl Hard Rock played with more balls than most all guy bands can muster!   And on EP tracks like ‘Trigger’ and ‘Black Magic’ they also prove that they have the songs too.

Tonight we get a set made up of the 5 EP tracks and three other tunes plus mid-set a seriously raucous rendition of Queen’s ‘Tie Your Mother Down’- a song that has been covered by some great bands in the past like The Foos, Lynch Mob, LA Guns and Warrant – and this version is as good as any of them.

Legs Electric is a band any lover of Hard Rock will love, and whilst we’ve seen them on stage a few times now their first real headline show proves that they have what it takes and that all the hard work has been worth it. These girls look set to take on the world and we’re sure gonna enjoy the ride.
