GODSMACK 100 HP REVIEW 2014

GODSMACK - 1000 HP

SPINEFARM / CAROLINE AUSTRALIA

AUGUST 29 2014

Godsmack is one of those odd bands that is huge domestically in the US and yet in some parts of the world are largely unknown. Hopefully when they finally hit Australia for Soundwave in 2015 they will be exposed to audiences who will lap up material like that on ‘1000 HP’.

Indeed few bands have successfully championed the cause of hard rock as much as Godsmack in the US and in the 16 years since their first long-player. Hailing from Boston they have racked up 4 Grammy nominations, 4 Platinum Awards, 20 million records sold and 3 consecutive US #1 albums! Now that in itself of course doesn’t tell the tale but surely it makes you curious?

This year ‘1000 HP’ sounds just like the album to get us in the rest of the world acquainted, kicking off as it does with the snarling punky anthem and title track ‘1000 HP’ it’s the sound of a driven, a hungry and a relentless band dedicated to the kind of high energy rock out that can’t help buy suck you into it’s orbit.

The best thing about ‘1000 HP’ for us is the sheer consistency and drive of the songs here, not letting up the pace until you hit the final track ‘Turning to Stone’ which has an almost grungy feel that belies a real power psychedelic power, like that which bands like Alice in Chains used to muster.

The real power of the album though comes before that final note in songs like ‘FML’ and ‘What’s Next’ which meld energy and dynamic that few bands can put across so well. Add to that the power and density of tracks like ‘Generation Day’ and ‘Nothing Comes easy’ and you have the headiest of mixes.

It’s an album not to miss.
