GARY NUMAN LIVE AT THE PERTH ASTOR THEATRE MAY 25 2014

GARY NUMAN

THE ASTOR THEATRE, PERTH WA AUSTRALIA

MAY 25 2014

Gary Numan kicked off his Australian Tour tonight in Perth Western Australia and The Rockpit was there to see it. Paul Hadlington reports...

Gary Numan - The god father of electric music and pioneer of Industrial rock, lands back on Australian shores for the first night of his 2014 ‘Splinter’ World Tour. The Rockpit thought they would attend and see if there is truth of what the music press have labelled his finest tour so far, and by god they are right!

Gone are the days of the heavy makeup and the robotic awkward skinny, shy lad that fronted Tubeway Army in the late 70’s, which he has now matured into a confident, vibrant showman that is clearly enjoying his music and life, this shows in his performance tonight. In the past few years we have seen his career go from strength to strength and this reflects now in his live performance, The ‘Splinter’ Tour kicks off its Australian leg at Perth’s Astor Theatre to a sell out crowd.

The show consists mostly of songs from the new cd ‘Splinter’ with a few tracks from his early days and some from recent years, with 19 songs on the setlist, you forget just how much music Mr Numan has actually written. ‘Resurrection’ the track from 2011’s ‘Dead Sun Rising’ cd is a great opener to the show with its moody intro that builds into a stomping track. ‘I am dust,’ ‘Everything Comes Down to This,’ and ‘Here in the Black’ re all quality tunes from the ‘Splinter’ cd. ‘Down in the Park’ is a track from the replicas album that has been reworked and sounds so fresh, you can see why it still is a crowd favourite and a worthy place on his setlist.

‘Lost’ follows which is another great song off ‘Splinter’ then we have his most famous song ‘Cars,’ its funny how times have changed, I’m sure when Gary played this song 30 years ago all he was greeted by was raised pumping fists in the air, now he’s greeted with hundreds of people holding their camera phones in the air recording it. Next we have the best track of the night the mighty ‘Pure,’ this is without doubt some of Numan’s finest work, It is a fine mix of hard industrial/rock. The set is finished with a encore of ‘I Die, You Die’ then ‘Are Friends Electric’ which was his first hit single and a strange hypnotic song ‘My Last Day’ to finish the show.

The Gary Numan show at the Astor Theatre establishes him as the leader in his field, gone are the days when he was a teen pop icon, Numan is now older and a born again rocker, this is a must see show, get your tickets before this tour sells out (if not already) you wont be disappointed.
