FREEDOM CALL BEYOND ALBUM REVIEW 2014

FREEDOM CALL - BEYOND

STEAMHAMMER / SPV

FEBRUARY 21 2014

If you want some high quality clean sounding powerful melodic metal with a touch of the orchestral, a real epic feel and crammed with uplifting songs and harmonies you’ve come to the right place as that is exactly what Freedom Call has been doing for fifteen years and 8 studio albums.

Vocalist and guitarist Chris Bay explains the basic idea behind the current album: “The most important thing about everything you do is that you enjoy doing it. We always concentrate on the positive first, which reflects our character. Optimism is one of our most important philosophies, and that’s exactly what Beyond is about.”

It certainly shows as the compositions here sparkle like crazy diamonds. If you are familiar with Freedom Call then there’s nothing to worry about, if you aren’t and love Melodic Power Metal then you are in for a real treat.

With so many songs to savour here it’s the epic title track that really sets the high watermark; but there’s  plenty of class too on songs like ‘Union Of The Strong’ (the first single), ‘Knights Of Taragon’ and ‘Colours Of Freedom’. If we were picking our favourite though it has to be either that title track or maybe the powerful ‘Paladin’ or the rhythmic ‘Dance off the Devil’ which has an almost folky feel and tribal drumming – a bit of a departure that works well.

Another quality release from Freedom Call.

Beyond will be available in three different formats: as a Digipak, on vinyl LP plus CD and – in a special fan-edition – as a box including book, poster, Digipak and bonus CD. Bay: “The 40-pagebook presents the story of the album in words and pictures, everything is kept very personal.” The bonus CD which is included in the fan edition consists of 13 previously unreleased live tracks: six of them were recorded at the ‘Live In The BlackForest’ concert in June 2013, and seven more at the unique ‘Unplugged &Masqueraded’ live event at Nuremberg’s Rockfabrik in September 2013.
