EDGE OF THORNS INSOMNIA REVIEW 2014

EDGE OF THORNS - INSOMNIA

KILLER METAL RECORDS

APRIL 4 2014

Edge of Thorns features Ralf Scheepers (ex-Gamma Ray/Primal Fear) and has been around in various forms since 1996 producing a Metal not unlike Gamma Ray and Germany’s Rage. And the good news is that Insomnia is the sort of album to keep you awake at night (Am I allowed to use such lame jokes?)

After a nursery rhyme opening ‘Dark Side of Your Life’ screams in with some meaty old school Metal. There’s an almost early Twisted Sister vibe to the delivery and you imagine the band steamrollering unbelievers in a giant rock ‘n’ roll juggernaut.

The pace keeps up for the razor-riffed ‘Yearning Has Begun’ before the more complex title track takes us into more Progressive territory. ‘Metal Unity’ however has all the fist pounding crunch and directness you would hope for, while the intriguingly titled ‘The Watchmaker’ could almost be a later Guns ‘n’ Roses composition as it has that epic Axl vibe.

It’s really from this point that the album gets even more interesting, with the similarly muscular ‘A Caress of Souls’ another epic; and ‘Walking Like a Ghost’ summoning up another old school classic; and ‘The Seven Sins of Arthur McGregor’ a song you need to hear! .

‘Death Dealer’ bursts in with fireworks on guitar and ends up being one of the most immediate songs here, while closer ‘Is This the Way it Ends’ confounds us completely and sounds like nothing else here – a gentle mid tempo lament that has an almost drunken sing-along quality to it.

A great album all up well worth a listen if you love your Metal old school!
