EARTH

ROSEMOUNT HOTEL,

PERTH WA AUSTRALIA

JUNE 18 2014

For fans of live music, a gig on a Wednesday night is no big deal especially when it's quality music and from a band who delivers a solid live experience. Drone/doom pioneers Earth delivered Perth a musical feast on Wednesday that really showed why this band is one of the best at what they do.

Last time they were here in 2012 certaintly made an impression on me and so seeing them again was pretty much a must. What really stood out was the slow tempo and the fact that drummer Adrienne Davies is really the glue that holds everything together. While the tempos are extremely slow, by know means does this make things easier. In fact it seems to be more difficult as timing is really as important as any of the technical aspects or melodies and riffs that emanate from the guitars.

Guitarist Dylan Carlson is an amazing musician, the feel of every note felt as the power chords, doomy riffs and the occasional soloey part thrown in a real pleasure on the ears and visually watching him perform and seeing his emotion pour out only helps the fans feel that emotion as well. But as much of the focus may obviously be on him, at least for me my attention was diverted a lot of times to Adrienne on the drums. Her impeccable timing and visual performance is really a highlight of the whole show and I think makes you appreciate what she truly does for the band.

Let's also not forget about Bill Herzog on bass, while many fans may not necessarily pay much attention to his performance, the bass in Earth is also an important part and is a noise that can be felt right through your bones which is not something you can really get on an album. When those rumbles come through, it feels good and that's a great feeling to have.

Earth may not be everyone's cup of tea. The mind numbingly slow pace can drive an ordinary person insane and the repitious parts may become bothersome but to those that enjoy this kind of music, it's something that must be seen live. After seeing them last time they were in Perth and comparing it to tonight's performance, I would say it was even better this time around. Let's hope they come back again real soon.
