It’s hard to believe it’s over four years ago now that we lost Ronnie; and concerts like this really bring home what a great talent the Rock community lost that day in May 2010 when the Master left us to fend for ourselves.

Filmed at London’s Hammersmith Apollo on 12th December 1993 this previously unreleased concert features the newly reformed Dio in fine form as they mark the last date on their European Tour in support of the Strange Highways album. It’s a show that both sees some fine versions of tracks from that album as well as Dio classics and a smattering of Dio’s best known tunes from Rainbow and Black Sabbath.

Some music is timeless and Dio was instrumental in defining a sound in Rock music that so many bands have sought to replicate, but when you hear songs like opener ‘Stand Up and Shout’; ‘Rainbow in the Dark’; ‘Holy Diver’ or ‘We Rock’ you know you are listening to one of the true greats.

The visuals on this DVD dating from 1993 are surprisingly good, and the band, consisting of Vinny Appice on drums, Jeff Pilson on bass (both of whom The Rockpit has interviewed) and Tracy G (Guitar) are tight as a drum. I never saw Dio on this tour but was lucky enough to catch him a number of times throughout his career, including his first tour with Dio in the UK and his last tour with Heaven and Hell when it took in Australia. This night just brings back the memories, and a few tears.

If you want to let the memories roll in, or were too young to see the man in action at the time this is an essential reminder of a great talent.
