DIABLO BLVD FOLLOW THE DEADLIGHTS REVIEW 2015

DIABLO BLVD - FOLLOW THE DEADLIGHTS

NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS

JANUARY 16 2014

Great name Diablo Blvd. though I have to confess I hadn’t heard of the band until Nuclear Blast sent through the latest release – ‘Follow the Deadlights’ which as it turns out is the band’s third full-length outing. Even before pushing play the prospect of a Belgian Heavy Metal band, and not only that one fronted by an ex-Flemish stand-up comedian was as mouth-watering as a glass of Stella Artois!

Sonically Diablo Blvd. is heavy in the way that Metallica and Danzig are heavy, with more than a touch here of COC (don’t ask me if they always sounded like that as I’ve yet to plunder the back catalogue). It’s a very good album, and one which has had a good few spins in the office, and even though it’s pretty consistent, of course we have our favourites.

If you want to take a dip first then the ‘Horror Film’ flavoured title track, has a cool Gothic Rock vibe and laid-back cool, it’s a big sound and beautifully produced. Even better are tracks like ‘Beyond The Veil’; ‘Get Up 9’; ‘We Are Legion’ and closer ‘Inhuman’.

Where Diablo Blvd. really impress though is on ‘Peace Won By War’ which showcases some great guitar and a harder edge; and ‘Son of Cain’ where Alex Agnew really nails the vocals on one of the Rockiest numbers here. This is refined Rock with just that touch of Horror-Goth that isn’t at all overpowering and adds a darkness to what is really a traditional Rock band in the vein of mid-period The Cult via H.I.M.

A great way to start your 2015…
