Courtney Love Live Metro City Perth 2014 Review

COURTNEY LOVE LIVE AT METRO CITY, PERTH AUGUST 13 2014

COURTNEY LOVE

METRO CITY, PERTH AUSTRALIA

AUGUST 13 2014

One of the last shows Courtney Love played before hitting Perth Western Australia for the first date of her much anticipated ‘You Know My Name’ Tour was my old stomping ground of Rock City in the UK back in May.  It rocked big time apparently, and tonight is no different.

Enveloped in the warm arms of Perth’s adoring and predominantly female fans, and after a spirited set from local support Tommy Hawks Courtney saunters to the stage as you might imagine drawing on a cigarette, and with little ado launches into a setlist that pretty much pleases everyone.

You’ve got to imagine that over the years Love has pretty much grown accustomed to the same old media attention harping on about the same things again and again, but as a performer where it counts – musically – she delivers even if she does play to the stereotype somewhat starting with that cigarette and two songs in being handed a plastic glass of what she tells us laughing, is a ‘rather large’ tequila.  Whether it was tequila or water I’d certainly like to believe it was the former.

Ably supported by a band that sports a rather Rockabilly-looking Ginger Wildheart and puts aside for the moment the almost constant rumours of a Hole reunion she seems comfortable on Metro City’s stage. By the time the band hit’s its real stride with ‘Malibu’ and Courtney has shed her outer layers to reveal a grey slip/skirt combo she has the crowd right where she wants them.

And thereon in its really rock star stuff with the foot up on the wedges almost constantly, sporting her trademark Rickenbacker she’s in full flight even if at least one of her band is suffering from a long flight and sickness it doesn’t affect Micko’s playing and Courtney tells us she wants to see him ‘Puking until we’re satisfied’ – now that’s rock and roll!

Of course we get every song we ever wanted tonight and also the new single ‘You Know My Name’ which is a satisfyingly trashy number is lapped up by the fans. The real show stoppers though are the ones you might expect and the crowd throws themselves into almost every moment.

All too soon it’s over and the encores flash by so fast. You remember when all is said and done what great music Hole put out over the years and how Cortney, now in her 50th year is as rock and roll as it gets…
Get out and see the rest of the tour – this is more than just a nostalgia trip, it’s essential.
