CLAP YOUR HANDS AND SAY YEAH - ONLY RUN

XTRA MILE / SHOCK RECORDS

JUNE 13 2014

After a killer debut I was kind of underwhelmed by the last two releases by CYHSY, sure they were OK but the real magic wasn’t there. Now after jettisoning three members the five-piece that gave us those first three is down to just two.

Frontman Alec Ounsworth though doesn’t seem to let it slow him down though and here self-produces just like on that debut. It’s something that works well in places but there is no hiding the different sound with less bass and more synth and largely with the vocals more prominent in the mix amidst the layers of sound.

CYHSY still has that huge sound in places, and on tracks like ‘As Always’ they prove that the sound they became synonymous with – that kind of  retro post-punk meaty hook-laden soup - can be just as essential as they were when they first raised their heads above the parapet. ‘Beyond Illusion’ takes a different path with star-filled vocals atop a dance rock backdrop. The pair work better than anything else here.

It may just be CYHSY’s second best record, and that in itself is a helluva achievement.
