BLOODY HAMMERS - UNDER SATAN'S SUN

Bloody Hammers third outing ‘Under Satan’s Sun’ is the kind of album that blends the Dark Horror inspiration of H.P. Lovecraft and Ray Bradbury with a Hammer Horror classic 60s and 70s Horror Movie narrative. With a low key opening ‘The Town that Dreaded Sundown’ eases the listener in gently before ‘Spearfinger’ adds atmospherics and a sense of menace. This is Horror Rock but not in the obvious way, that say The Misfits or Australian Bands like Gay Paris take, it is for one thing a cleaner sound and somehow for that it is all the more menacing.

At times listening to songs like ‘Spearfinger’ you get a sense of bands like later Sisters of Mercy bubbling under the covers, but the lack of electronic sounds and more of a sense of subdued Doom make it an impressively accessible listen.  For a band that has released material so frequently too, the quality is perhaps surprisingly undeniable.

‘USS’ is also Bloody Hammers most melodic and laid back release, relying far more on atmospherics than power to deliver the goods. ‘Death Does Us Part’, the single, is a low key modern Gothic ,and dare we say radio friendly song that may well broaden The Hammers’ audience.

At its worst tracks like ‘The Moon-Eyed People’ seem workmanlike, though inoffensive, but there are glimpses on songs like closer ‘The Necromancer’ that bands like Bauhaus, or perhaps early Peter Murphy material have been absorbed and added to the collective brain, allbeit seen through essentially Hard Rock eyes. At its best the opener, the single and ‘Welcome to the Horror Show’ let you know that Bloody Hammers have it in them to become great.
