BIRTH OF JOY - PRISONER

LONG BRANCH RECORDS / SPV

MARCH 7 2014

Dutch psychedelic rockers BIRTH OF JOY have been busy touring pretty much since day one, and it shows on their fourth album proper ‘Prisoner’. There’s such a joyous outburst of emotion here that you can’t learn or fake. This is rock like it should be – all caught up with sex, drugs and rock and roll with songs to take you back.

I hear some really primal influences here: from MC5 and the Stooges to proto-Prog like early Floyd, but there’s certainly a Punk and Grunge element too with traces of Nirvana and early Pearl Jam as well as a heavier Stoner inclination. It makes an interesting mix and an immediate impression. Throw in a great drum sound and elegant keys and a baritone vocalist who also plays guitar and you have an unusual three-piece set-up like the Doors used to have.

While everything here has that psychedelic tinge there are plenty of straight forward rockers – like: like ‘Keep Your Eyes Shut’, ‘Rock and Roll Show’, and ‘Grow,’ the latter being one of our favourites here. There are also the Doors-like ‘Holding on’, the spacey ‘Three Day Road’ and the title track which takes is into real Stoner territory. Perhaps our favourite though is the rather unhinged ‘How It Goes’ that while rather out of character then the rest of the songs collected here has real amped-up Psych-Metal pyrotechnics!

This is a very worthwhile listen from a band that has obvious influences yet doesn’t sound derivative and clearly isn’t afraid to experiment. One for your collection!

…The new album PRISONER was recorded and produced in November 2013 by Joris Wolff (e.g. De Staat, Within Temptation and Mister and Mississippi) and mastered by Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Artic Monkeys, David Lynch and Dr. John)and is released worldwide in March 2014.
