BETH HART BANG BANG BOOM BOOM ALBUM REVIEW

BETH HART - BANG BANG BOOM BOOM

MASCOT RECORDS

OUT NOW

Beth Hart has had a far from smooth ride on the way to creating ‘Bang Bang Boom Boom’ and it shows in the music. With an eclectic back-catalogue that takes in blues, jazz, rock, gospel and grunge, Hart’s latest album seems to be a summation of her journey so far as well as her most mature album as a song-writer.

Over the last few years Hart has played with not only guitar legend Jeff Beck, but also Slash and latter-day guitar slinger Joe Bonamassa – their second collaboration of covers earning them a Grammy nomination.

Bang Bang Boom Boom sees Beth again drawing on myriad influences: from the Gospel of ‘Spirit of God’ though the swing of ‘Swing My Thing Back Around’ to the delicate fragility of ‘Thru the Window of My Mind’ and all points in between. It’s an engaging ride.

Along the way we hear some amazing vocals like on the Billie Holiday-like ‘Baddest Blues’ or the searching, initially almost whispered, Blues of ‘Caught Out in the Rain’.

The highlight for us though has to be that magical combination of Beck on guitar and Hart taking on the Etta James classic ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ it’s the sort of song that tugs at your soul and makes you realise what a wonderful gift Hart has in that soft gold voice.

If you are attending Bluesfest this year place Hart at the top of your must see list, and if you are in Sydney or Melbourne in April pencil her solo dates into your calendar.
