3 YEARS HOLLOW - THE CRACKS

IMAGEN RECORDS

FEBRUARY 11 2014

‘The Devil’s Slave’ that opens 3 Years Hollow’s first long-player is the perfect distillation of all 3 Years Hollow does right: it’s riff driven rock, melodic, yet modern and full of light and space.  This is the sort of music that lovers of guitar driven rock should let into their hearts and collections especially if they can also fall in love with the thoroughly up-to-date road the music often takes, and the rather constant pacing of the songs. ‘Chemical Ride’ that immediately follows has similar alt-rock grandiosity to the opener without losing an ounce of hard rocking spirit; and ‘For Life’ (which features Sevendust Guitarist/Songwriter Clint Lowry) should be enough to nail it for some especially if you love the message of hope in the midst of despair.

In truth ‘The Cracks’ is simply a great Modern Melodic Rock album peppered with lyrics which seem to be drawn from real life experience. It’s hard to pin any obvious key influences as there seems just to be a general appreciation of good Rock music from the last 30 years, but if you need comparisons there is something of ‘Falling In Reverse’ about them.

If I have one criticism of the album is that it is rather one-paced, and good as songs like ‘Run Away’ and ‘Fallen’ are, and as well-crafted as the dynamics are within those songs  I’d love the band to find another few gears.  There’s plenty to love here though and songs like ‘Taken By All’ particularly stand tall, but there’s still just something about the remastered radio hit ‘Remember’ with its searing guitar solo that makes it both an apt closing track and the best song here.
