23 ACES REDEMPTION WAVES REVIEW 2014

23 ACES - REDEMPTION WAVES.

MIGHTY MUSIC

JANUARY 12 2015

Belgium’s 23 Acez do it the old-fashioned way – straight ahead Hard Rock with a distinct old school feel and plenty of melody, which manages to sound comfortingly timeless yet still have appeal to listeners of all ages due to the strength of the songs and solid vocals. There’s a real Hard Melodic Rock flavour in the main from the harder fare - like opener ‘Loopholes’  which has a big enough sound to make you want more.

Sometimes the keyboards can be a little intrusive and unnecessary to this ear – I didn’t feel them warranted on ‘Alone’ one of the strongest groove-laden rockers here, but elsewhere they add just the right balance to the sound.

Elsewhere whilst ‘The Bigger Picture’ captures that real early eighties feel, it’s light and airy and suitably emotional; as a contrast the title track is more atmospheric with a light opening before the driving guitars hit and the track rides forward to become the sort of mini-epic that just elevates the whole and gives it more weight.

Best of the remainder would have to be the very melodic ‘From the Moment’ which soars away, whilst both the lighter, summery ‘Looking Back’ (which reminds us a bit of Tyketto) and closer ‘Morning Sun’ leave you wanting more. This may not be the finished article and may need a tweak here and there but the raw materials and fine craft make it one of the more promising melodic releases of the New Year.
