ORION MUSIC & MORE FESTIVAL

Belle Isle, Detroit, Michigan

June 8 - 9

METALLICA BRING IT HOME

The second annual Orion Music & More Festival took place on Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan on June 8, 9 this year and it has been confirmed that Belle Isle will be the new home for Orion for 2014 & 2015.

The festival included 38 bands on five stages. Music genres ranged from metal to thrash metal, dub step, indie and punk. It was nice to see such an array of music. There was definitely something there for everyone to enjoy whether you are a huge Metallica follower or not. One of my personal favorites was Gogol Bordello. A gypsy punk influenced band from Manhattan. The band is a never ending burst of energy. It was virtually impossible not to move to their music. The crowd had a blast watching this band perform. Dropkick Murphy’s put on a powerful performance as well that had the crowd in a massive uproar.  Deftones are always a fan favorite and played to a massive gathering of fans.

The biggest shock of the weekend was Metallica playing a surprise performance under the fake name “dehaan”.  Cliff Burton’s father appeared on stage to tell the crowd to enjoy the show, immediately afterwards James came out to introduce “dehaan” and the rest of the band joined him onstage and they proceeded to play “Kill Em All” in its entirety. Fans were running in droves to the stage from all directions to catch a glimpse of the surprise performance.

Fans travelled from all over the world to see Metallica. I spoke to a few gentlemen that flew in from Venezuela, this being their 10th Metallica show.

The festival also included “Kirk’s Crypt” which was full of Kirk Hammet’s personal collection of horror movie memorabilia that he has collected over the years. The Crypt included various Frankenstein heads/ masks, the Mummy from “The Mummy’s Tomb”, an electric chair, as well as various guitars that were themed after some of his favorite movies.

The Metallica museum was another attraction for fans to check out. The Museum was full of various Met gear that had been used over the last 30 years.

There was also the Met Club that was specifically for Metallica fan members. The tent included fan memorabilia that the guys have collected over the years from their fans.

There was a custom car and motorcycle section as well that was full of local artists and car collectors.

Lars had a “Hit the Lights Films” tent set up to showcase a few of his favorite movies.

Overall the Orion Music & More festival is massive and will surely be the one music festival that you cannot afford to miss. I cannot wait to see what next year brings.
