MUSE LIVE AT PERTH ARENA

AUSTRALIAN TOUR NOVEMBER 30 2013

You know I never really fully appreciated or understood Muse, until tonight. Sure I loved their early albums and guitar driven rock, but over the years as they grew freer and experimented more, it passed me by a little. All I can say is that live Muse is a band you have to see. Tonight it all opened up for me, and suddenly it all made sense. Muse live is simply spectacular.

Of course before all that a very partisan crowd was warmed up by local band Birds of Tokyo, and even they tonight seemed to have an energy I’ve never seen in them before. Maybe it was the band that followed that put them on their A-game. Whatever it was Birds did a great job of holding the line till the pyramid descended.

Of course a descending Pyramid of light is a decent stage prop and Muse’s stage show tonight is stunning but the most important aspect – the music stands tall above it all.  There’s a balance and a sheer unrelenting dynamism to the music that propels it out past the lights straight to the beating heart of the crowd.

After the initial spoken word intro of ‘Isolated System’ when the first strains of ‘Supremacy’ ring out the crowd is already charged with anticipation and as ‘Supermassive Black Hole’ smashes through directly after the battle for the Arena is won. It’s astounding the impact Musa has on the audience and there’s a wonderful level of participation that so few bands mange to elicit so completely.

Choreographed to an inch of its life a Muse show isn’t exactly the most spontaneous of entertainments, but it runs like a well- oiled machine with spectacular lighting, lasers and set pieces beautifully designed to capture the crowd, Visually it’s so well done there’s nothing really to touch it but it’s the life the music releases into the atmosphere that charges it all.

Tonight the set-list is particularly well-balanced with old favourites prominent amongst the newer tracks from 2012’s ‘The 2nd Law’ to keep the audience at a constantly fluctuating between expectancy and excitement. Tracks from our favourite; ‘Black Holes and Revelations’ also seem to hit to right spots with the crowd.

As far as highlights go there were many: with ‘Starlight’ and the majestic ‘Knights of Cydonia’ taking the night for us, with stiff competition from the likes of ‘Hysteria’ or Time is Running Out’.

On occasion the laser show that the band has become increasingly associated with was perhaps a little self-indulgent and overlong at times and certainly didn’t manage to hold all of the crowd all of the night but  to novices like us it was all just part of the magic.  If you’ve never seen the band live before Muse is a revelation and tonight in Perth kicked off what should be a very memorable tour.
