KATAKLYSM LIVE AT THE ROSEMOUNT HOTEL

AUSTRALIAN TOUR DECEMBER 8 2013

Northern hyperblasters Kataklysm returned to Australia after a 5 year long hiatus, a tour that a lot of the hardcore fans would have been salivating at the mouth for after their previous tour blasted fans around the country. We caught them at the tail end of their Australian tour and this is what we saw.

Opening for the night and for the entire tour was Japanese death metal band Gotsu Totsu Kotsu who put on a seriously brutal show even if it sounded a bit generic at times. But it's still always good to see some different bands from other countries that are generally not known for their extreme forms of heavy music.

Kataklysm came on stage after a short delay and proceeded to pummel the crowd as hard as they could. Despite some problems with their stage monitors throughout the show, the band sounded good performing a lot of their well known classics to the newer material off their latest album "Waiting For The End To Come". The sound monitor fustration only seemed to fuel singer Maurizio Iacono and the rest of the band as they continued the onslaught through their back catalogue. "Push The Venom" was one of the heavier tracks from the set with it's heavy groove and mid-tempo hardcore/doom style, "Slither" following in a similar vein while new song "Like Animals" got the crowd moving early in the show.

The new stuff fitted very well with the older material, "Kill The Elite" a perfect example of how far the band have come but not too far astray from where the band come from. Always welcome addition "In Shadows And Dust" capped off a brutal assault from the French-Canadians who ended their Australian tour to a small but appreciative crowd in Perth. Hopefully as Maurizio promised, the band won't take as long to return to our shores.
