WELCOME TO GAY PARIS!

Gay Paris - Ya Ya's, Northbridge, Perth - 28th June 2013

If I had to describe this band called "Gay Paris" in a short summary, the first thing that comes to my mind is ZZ Top. Now imagine ZZ Top on acid and I think you may get this band. Hailing from Sydney, Gay Paris are on tour for their latest effort "The Last Good Party" which I recently heard a few tracks from and which subsequently made me curious to go see these guys live.

Playing at the very intimate Ya Ya's in Northbridge Perth, the small crowd were typical of this kind of music, bluesy grungy dirty rock with a hint of biker attitude and punk rock rebellion, it was perfect for this band. Getting myself familiar with the music was not on my agenda going in so a lot of the songs played were firsts for me which is always exciting. But hearing the latest single "Ash Wednesday Boudoir Party" which was also my first introduction to the band and the reason I was even there in the first place was a real pleasure to see. The band sounded great, vocalist Luke 'Wailin H' Monks very animated and comical on stage, certaintly not afraid to give everything he had, jumping into the crowd to somewhat humerously embarrass and embrace as many punters as possible though I'm sure those caught in his antics may feel otherwise! The music was good if you're into the bluesy greasy biker rock stuff, soundwise it was thumping, the close walls of the venue capturing every noise and trapping it in for everyone's ears.

The setlist was short but sweet, giving the crowd enough to go on and certaintly substantial for newcomers to the band, a sizeable chunk peek at what they have to offer. For me personally it has always been about the live experience and this band has been greatly able to not only retain the rawness of their studio recordings but make it translate very well in a live setting. That being said, the dirty bluesy rock genre always lends itself very well to these kinds of live setting, club shows are always the way to go. If this is your kind of thing I certaintly recommend checking these guys out, if not for the music then the interesting characters that are featured in this band or even the warped sense of humor found in the lyrics.
