LIVE REVIEW - EARTHLESS AUSTRALIA 2013

EARTHLESS - 2 SHOWS

The Rosemount Hotel, Perth - December 28th 2013

Mojos, Fremantle - December 29th 2013

After putting out one of the best albums of 2013 and also in their career with "From The Ages", psychedelic rockers Earthless set themselves up for anticpation to their 3rd Australian tour which rounded out the year at least for Perth which is where they kicked off the tour with 2 shows.

First show was at the Rosemount Hotel which is always a pleasure purely for the sound. A small crowd was hit with face melting jams from the very beginning and the band truly never let up with only a handful of lengthy songs at play with a whole lot of improvisation thrown into the mix. The band picked largely from the new album "From The Ages" with "Violence Of The Red Sea" sounding mesmerizing with it's 60's era style and Isaiah going nuts on the guitar. "Uluru Rock" is more laid back on the album but live it semed a bit more intense which turned out to be a good thing. At 14 minutes on the album we got the extended version live in person which further proved that the band sound even better live than on the album.

All 3 members of the band in their own right and in their own way completely showcased a talented mix of groove, technicality, vibe and just downright awe-inspiring performances. Drummer Mario Rubalcaba flawless in his drumming and really the glue that kept the band in the pocket the whole night, bass player Mike Eginton working perfectly with Mario and hitting the right notes at the right time to give not only that big sound but lay down some grooving rhythm work. Of course guitarist Isaiah Mitchell is simply awesome to watch, the improv at work is really something to behold but as I said, all 3 guys were amazing in their own right.

The second night at Mojo's in Fremantle was in some ways an even better show. Performance wise was largely the same with roughly the same setlist aside from the bonus encore songs the crowd got after the band had to give in from a rowdy applause and request. But the sound and vibe in the place was just a little better, it was more intimate with a very small crowd and every note and instrumental part could be heard with such clarity, it really was a flawless show. Highlight of the night goes to Mario for his amazing drumwork and it seemed like the other 2 guys looked to him for guidance as to where the songs were going to go. Whatever system they have in place for these types of things, it worked supremely well at this show.

It is a pity that not enough people check bands like Earthless out, the instrumental psychedelic rock a niche market I suppose but musically it's simply amazing and every music fan must check them out.
