LOCAL METAL: Cothe, Lightshift, Nucleust, Gone By Morning

LIVE IN FREMANTLE DECEMBER 6 2013

Supporting local music is always something I encourage, no matter where local is to people. And the different kinds of music that can be found in the underground scene can be really interesting and exciting as well as being disappointing and boring. That's what makes it fun, not knowing what you are going to get. This particular show featured four bands in Perth who are all up and coming bands, some making their debut, others trying to crack the big leagues but what we got was an eclectic mix of different genres throughout the night.

First band up was Cothe featuring a relatively heavy but melodic style with a female voice over the top of it. The music was very reminiscent of Karnivool type stuff, with guitar solos and melodic riffs veering side to side between the heavy and the soft. Overall it had a nice groove and with a few more bigger shows in the can, the band could potentially draw some decent crowds in time.

Next up was Lightshift, a 3 piece instrumental band verging on Satriani solos and grooves. The guitarist was amazing, shredding away while the bass and drum backed it up with an easy beat, clearly the guitar was the main focus in this band and it showed. The sound was near pitch perfect, at least to my ears anyway, the guitar tone crystal clear as he tore up the stage with a showcase of dazzling solos. A definite highlight of the night!

3rd band was Nucleust, who were making their live debut. A ferocious progressive metal band who were easily the heaviest thing to be heard on the night. The band shook the tiny stage as they opened up with some Meshuggah type riffs which was followed by a series of some highly intricate songs, the structures of which are decipherable only to the dedicated of the extreme metal genre. Make no mistake though, there are some mighty fine grooves to be heard here as the band used wierd time signatures and bizzare riff chords to blast the senses of the audience. The word heavy only begins to describe the band as they pummeled the crowd with a short but extremely loud and heavy set, a fitting way to make their live debut to the Fremantle crowd!

Final band of the night was Gone By Morning, a young group of hardcore enthusiasts who gave the crowd one final shot at the already obliterated senses of the small Freo crowd. While the band are relatively young, they looked to give it their all as they put out some heavy stuff, some nice grooves mixed in with chugging riffs mixed with a decent beat. The vocals were a little low in the mix but I did find this was the case with all the bands of the night so the vocal levels were not specifically a band thing. But overall, while it's not my favorite genre in the heavy scene, the young lads did alright for a final sendoff of the night which showcased a diverse range of what bands are on offer in the Perth/Fremantle local scene.
