AMORPHIS LIVE AT THE CAPITOL THEATRE PERTH 16 OCTOBER 2013

AMPORPHIS

LIVE AT THE CAPITOL, Perth

OCTOBER 16TH 2013

Amorphis is not a band that I listen to a whole lot but I am certaintly aware of their presence on the European metal scene and some of their classics like "Tales From The Thousand Lakes" and "Elegy". Even their latest album "Circle" came across my attention and it seemed like they fell into a heavier sound on this one with touches of death and black metal found in parts of the album. But as with most bands I either follow or come across, it's the live setting that shows who the band really is and after seeing the Finnish group live for the first time, I have to say I was impressed.

Support band for the night was none other than local Perth prog heroes Voyager, who funnily enough I had just seen open for Devin Townsend the night before. Not that the Amplifer Bar has the greatest sound in the world but Voyager always sound fantastic at this venue, the drums alone almost mechanical and synthetic in it's powerful sound which is a rare thing at this venue.

Kicking off an early night not too long afterwards was Amorphis, vocalist Tomi Joutsen cruising on stage last with his famous super long dreadlocks, embracing the crowd before launching into "Shades Of Gray" off their latest album "Circle". Already I could tell the sound was crystal clear, Amorhis sounding even better live than on their studio albums and it was proven further with folk metal track "Narrow Path" also off their latest effort. The band continued playing through a solid set that stuck more with their more recent releases but the band did head into earlier tracks later into the show like "Drowned Maid" and "Black Winter Day" to appease the old schoolers. "Nightbird's Song" off the new album was a highlight, going into an almost black metal style and certaintly one of the more aggressive songs on the night.

The encore set delved into older material including "Sky Is Mine" and "Into Hiding" which is a fantastic mid-tempo groove song. The Perth date was the final show on their very first Australia tour and judging by the crowd reactions and other reviews, it went well. Hopefully they can make the trek back here soon.
