LEGACY OF A HARD ROCK LEGEND

There has never been any doubt in my mind that Ronnie Montrose had as big an influence as anyone in shaping the sound of eighties American Hard Rock. It’s as simple as that. The fact that you can put on a Montrose album today and it still feels fresh and timeless shows that they got the basics so right almost everyone from Van Halen to pretty much every Hard Rock band that came out of the US through the mid-eighties.

This DVD is both a reminder of the great man’s legacy and a wonderful concert in itself. Packed with great music, not only by Ronnie but also by bands he was connected to or mentored or produced over the years it’s eighteen tracks from the concert plus six additional Montrose songs from a separate session.

Recorded live at the historic Regency Ballroom in San Francisco and mixed in 5.1 surround sound the DVD features some great performances from the likes of Neal Schon (Journey), Ricky Phillips (Styx), Eric Martin (Mr. Big), Tommy Thayer (Kiss) and many more. It also of course features his bandmates from Montrose – Sammy Hagar, Denny Carmassi and Bill Church with Joe Satriani stepping in to play Ronnie’s role.

At times your fist will be pumping in the air like mine was and at others there will be a tear in the corner of the eye. It’s so hard in a concert like this to pick highlights, and especially hard here as there are so many to choose from but for me it has to be the Montrose material – something as fresh today as it ever was – music whose spirit like Ronnie’s will never die.
