DEVIN TOWNSEND PERTH AUSTRALIA LIVE REVIEW 2013

DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT LIVE AT METROS FREO

AUSTRALIAN TOUR HITS PERTH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA - OCTOBER 15 2013

Devin Townsend is one of those guys everyone must see live at one time or another. Not just to experience his back catalogue in a live setting but to see this genius work the stage, the crowd and his sense of humour whether it be directly from the man himself poking fun at the crowd or the insanely bizarre videos displayed on stage showcasing what can only be described as weirdly funny. From Ziltoid himself to random cats and shoes, that alone was a highlight of the night.

Opening for The Devin Townsend Project was none other than Voyager, who in Perth have gotten a bit of a reputation as one of the bigger bands to come out of this part of the country. Their national success and their overseas tours have gained this band some well-deserved attention and they are musically a fitting choice as openers. Whether you are a fan or not, they are certainly a hard working band and they proved that again with their solid performance as supporting band for the night.

After a bizarre string of hilarious videos, many of which can probably be seen all over the net, it was time for Mr Townsend and Co to hit the stage. Opening with "Truth" which set the mood for the night, the packed crowd was instantly into it, headbanging and jumping into the swing of things. The set list was fairly varied hitting all around Devin's solo albums but unfortunately nothing from Strapping Young Lad which admittedly I was hoping for 1 or 2 tracks but by the end of the night it was not missed one bit.

Devin's solo stuff is still fantastic, more melodic but more twisted and crazy in other ways. "Kingdom" was a highlight, the grooving tempo with the orchestral noise sounding huge, Devin's vocals overpowered slightly by the bigness of the sound which I did find through-out the night here and there during a lot of the songs. The band still sounded great though, pretty much like the album's but the volume turned up a few more notches of course! "More!" was another highlight as was "Addicted" but a personal highlight had to be "War" with it's repeated melodic groove of the song so addictive and seeing it live was just that much more better.

The band continued ripping through more classic tracks including "Planet Smasher" and a brilliant performance of "Juular" until we came to what I can only assume was the encore stage though with Devin's crazy antics and his take on the whole cliché metal show thing, the encore may have not existed at all. 4 more tracks rounded the night which included probably the more "out-there" songs including the country boot-tapping "Heatwave", the dancey "Lucky Animals" and the Halloween inspired "Vampira" before ending the night with the more mellow "Deep Peace" which I'm not sure if that was the best song for a closer as it kind of brought the vibe down a few notches after such a high energy show. But hardly a downfall of the show as overall it was a fantastic night and seeing Devin Townsend performing live is truly a great experience!
