wednesday 13 The Dixie Dead CD Review

Wednesday 13 is unforgettable: with an image that that takes the influences of Alice Cooper, The Adams Family and The Munsters  and mashes it with all the best cult horror movie anti-heroes then turns it up to 11 (or maybe 13?); and a sound that is full on balls-out horror punk you simply can’t escape him. After what seems like a last flirtation with the Murderdolls and a last album ‘Calling All Corpses’ that pushed the boundaries of his trademark sound, Wednesday is back and this time it’s scary how good he is.


There’s been a lot of water under the haunted bridge since Wednesday’s debut, and if anything his image now in 2013 is more mainstream than ever: with zombies and vampires rating high in shows like The ‘Walking Dead’ and ‘True Blood’ amongst others. In 2013 the world seemingly has finally caught on to what we always knew was so cool and fun.


When we spoke to him a week ago Wednesday wounded like a man on a mission and with an album of this quality under his belt ’13 could well be his year.


The Dixie Dead sees Wednesday return to the raw power and heaviness of his debut and as the press says it ‘promises to usher in a whole new era of fame, fortune and gruesome glory…’  


Opening with a movie theme introduction, heavy on the drums ‘Death Arise’ eases you into what is the biggest, baddest song here: ‘Bloodsucker’ and as soon as that opening scream hits the speakers you know that this will be something special. Sure the themes are the same, the shock and horror and humour are all present but the songs are somehow more immediate, more intense and more passionate. This in short sounds like the work of a man reborn and rejuvenated.


If you like it loud and let’s face it who doesn’t, then songs like ‘Get Your Grave On’ that was sampled in a great movie style trailer that was part Kill Bill, part Mexican Kung Fu nightmare, replete with swords, gunfights and small dogs, is a Manson like industrial Goth groove that is irresistible.


And the album keeps that heavy horror groove going without letting you catch your breath. Fans will love songs like ‘Curse the living’ with its ghoulish groove and our current favourite ‘Too Fast For Blood’ which has echoes of Motley at their most destructive. The great news for the converted is there’s plenty more where they came from, all hard and heavy, with the whole band on fire throughout.


In an album that doesn’t let go of you with its hellfire grip ‘Hail Ming’ immortalises Flash Gordon’s evil nemesis in a relentless barrage before ‘Coming Attractions’ acts like a horror movie trailer splitting the album in two. The title track that follows ‘Dixie Dead’ is a call to the South’s undead soldiers to rise and scare the hell out of the living against a backdrop of swampy blues guitar and a marching beat. It’s a little different and cool as hell…


After just a few listens you feel that this is the one that might just open the floodgates, it’s very Wednesday, very heavy and a real solid album without a misstep in sight. ‘Ghost Stories’ reminds me of one of my favourite east coast horror punk outfits The Erotics, with an infusion from Sisters of Mercy and is as laid back as we get. ‘Fuck You (In Memory of)…’ is another high-point: an insanely catchy party tune, full of menace.  



The last pairing of ‘Carol Anne… They’re Here’ and ‘Hands of the Ripper’ that close the album both add another log onto Wednesdays hellish Bonfire. ‘Carol Anne’ almost has a sixties girl band vibe to it – its genius and makes you want to dance all the way to the nearest graveyard!  ‘Hands of the Ripper’ takes us back to the power and the passion of where we began ending with the scream that we started with.  Wednesday’s back…be scared, be very scared…


2013 is the year of 13!  The Dixie Dead was released on February 22nd on 3Wise Records.
