Whitesnake has always been a great live band in no matter what incarnation you look at it’s always been about the live performance. But with already a decent selection of live Whitesnake fare out there what is it that makes David Coverdale and Co’s ‘Made in Japan’ so indispensable?

Well for one, this is a band in glorious form: led from the front by the golden voice of Coverdale ‘The Wrecking Crew’ of Michael Devin (bass) & Brian Tichy (drums) lay down a backbone for the blistering guitar work of Doug Aldrich & Reb Beach and guest keysman Brian Ruedy.

Looking at the video it’s clear the 2011 vintage of the band, is one that knows how to work the stage and the performance is pretty much flawless. So for anyone that saw the band on the ‘Forevermore’ tour, this is a great document of the shows that supported one of Whitesnake’s best albums in years.
With a rousing “Are you ready?’ you are thrust headlong into ‘Best Years’ from 2008’s ‘Good to be Bad’ before finding the familiarity of perennial ‘Snake classic  ‘Give Me All Your Love Tonight’ and the comfort of ‘Love Ain’t No Stranger’ which generates a rousing sing-along.

Dealing with light and shade, the pomp is immediately offset by a gentler ‘Is This Love’ from the 1987 album before being thrown back into the fray for ‘Forevermore’s two standouts the bombast of ‘Steal Your Heart Away’ and the epic ‘Forevermore’. It’s a rollicking start to a rollercoaster of a set that features Whitesnake’s best known songs along with a good selection of newer fare which only proves how well the new material stands up.

Filmed at Japan’s iconic Loud Park Festival at Saitama Super Arena on October 15th 2011 the DVD or Blu-ray originally shot for Japanese TV has been carefully edited and mixed to beautifully capture the event and give those waiting for the 2013 ‘Year of the Snake Tour’ which hits the UK in May and June a taste of what’s to come.

For those aficionados of Guitar and Drums solos we get them too, sandwiching ‘Forevermore’s’ lead single ‘Love Can Set You Free’: and rather magnificent they are too, before the crowd is whipped into a frenzy with the final thrust of ‘Fool For Your Loving’; ‘Here I Go Again’ and ‘Still Of The Night’.

Including a nice bonus of soundcheck recordings from the different Japanese venues on the second CD ‘Made In Japan’ is not only a great document of a band at the top of their game it’s also bloody good value for the fans too.

As the press release says ‘Don’t be shy...C’mon...Make Some Fucking Noise!!!’ and we wholeheartedly concur with those sentiments.
