APOCRYPHON

2013

COMING SOON

We’ve been playing this for months and only just realised no one had reviewed it! Oh well that’s how it goes when the desk is groaning under the weight of all that Metal!

We love the Sword – perhaps the best exponent out there of Stoner Rock which in itself is a pretty cool tag these days (you can always tell when the hordes tip up the bandwagon). The Sword isn’t flash or fancy and as soon as you hear them you can pretty much recount their influences and that’s largely why they succeed – there’s no pretending to be the next big deconstructivists – it’s just good solid Metal – a riff, some words, a hook and a solo or five...

It’s really those choruses that set The Sword apart though – get ‘em singing while they’re grooving then hit them with the solo and there’ll be another one along soon. Throw in a few slow builds and breakneck boogies and there’s you album! I’m sure it’s not quite that simple but the formula works and on ‘Apocryphon’ it’s all come together again.

Greta album by one of the best in the genre and not a weak track here so take your pick! Ours though is probably the Bluesy ‘The Hidden Masters’ but it’s a tight race.
