CIRCUS OF LOST SOULS

MAD ASSOCIATION

2013

FAST, FUN AND FURIOUS

Shannon has been around since 1998 and on that basis France is hiding it’s Melodic Rock pretty well as this is our first listen to the band. And our immediate reaction is that it’s a huge shame we didn’t hear about them earlier as this is great.

If you like your Melodic Rock to be fast, fun and furious take any of the first three tracks here – they all pretty much hit the spot, but the opening pair: ‘Ride to Live’ and ‘Forever Now’ are really cool tunes that you’ll be rushing to play again once the album ends. On an album that simply rocks they sit alongside the more melodic rockers like ‘Dust To Dust’ and the harder-edged ‘Death on the Run’.

Ballad ‘Can’t Stop the rain’ is as good as any slow number I’ve heard in the last year: a beautiful song. As a complete contrast ‘Don’t Get Me Wrong’ sees the guys chugging along like vintage Motley Crue! It’s that kind of variety that keeps things bubbling along with the help of some great guest musicians like Harry HESS (of Harem Scarem), Tony MILLS (of Shy and TNT) and Paul Sabu.

Our current picks have to be the fast and fun ‘Let’s Make Rock’ and the rocking pair ‘Kick It Down’ and ‘Drive Me Crazy’ as well as the opening pair and that wonderful ballad ‘Can’t Stop the Rain’ (the other slow number ‘In Your Eyes’ is far too ‘Bon Jovi’ for its own good, but we have to admit it’s growing on us by the minute). The most stunning moment though just might be a version of one of the songs I most hated from the 80’s Bronski Beat’s‘ Smalltown Boy’ it is stunning in its reinterpretation and thankfully almost unrecognisable!

For a band that has been around for a while and seen a number of personnel changes, things are looking good for the 2013 of Shannon.
