SKILLET LET IT ROLL

As a Christian Modern Rock band Skillet has been busy: releasing an amazing nine albums since the late nineties. It was probably 2006’s ‘Comatose’ though and the tweaking of their sound that brought them to wider attention. ‘Rise’ builds on their last two releases but also looks back further to bring what is perhaps their most complete album to date.

To me there’s a great balance here from Paramore-esque compositions to heartier fare. Opening pair ‘Rise’ and ‘ Sick of It’ allay many fears of a left-turn and deliver the expected goods but it’s  poppier ‘Good to be Alive’ that almost veers towards Matchbox 20 sonically, now don’t get me wrong it’s a great song with a great vocal but its not completely convincing despite a catchy chorus.

Throughout the album there’s some jarring between the main lead local and the female backing – in places it works beautifully in others its either largely lost in the mix or seems somewhat unresolved, and that may come from some largely uninspired lyrics.

For Skillet fans this will be a welcome addition to the catalogue but while it might maintain the status quo its unlikely to win over droves of new fans.
