ALBUM OF THE YEAR?

Wow, this one really is amazing…

Aside from the very obvious screenshot of Zeppelin that opens the album on ‘Kings Highway’ this is by no measure pastiche: it’s an album that holds the best of Hard Rock up high and breathes new life into it. Huge guitars, perfect rhythm section and vocals that to my mind at least that recall Robert Plant meets the underrated Shannon Hoon (sadly missed of Blind Melon) it’s simply glorious.

With a bass-line that rips another hole before we’re alight, ‘Polygon of Eyes’ could well be the best Sabbath meets NWOBHM meets  Rainbow song you’ve ever heard. Check out the video if you don’t believe us… It makes you ask the question what sort of music did these guys feed on when they were youngsters?

The rest of the album is a revelation and it’s ’Liquor’ that has to be one of our favourite tracks here, and again you can check out the video to that too. Some songs just have all the planets lined up and this one rips holes for the music to flood into before it sears them shut. It has more of an early Black Crowes vibe than anything else here, but with a feel and desire that the Crowes sem to have abandoned.

To then back it up with a song like ‘Antioch’; such a powerful song, with such a great dynamic, and man and when that guitar kicks in, could well be criminal! I’ve not heard anything that inspiring in a long time; it just makes you wonder where it and more importantly Scorpion Child came from!

In an album with no time to take a breath ‘Red Blood (The River Flows)’is a monster weighing in at just under 14 minutes, it paints a whole other story about the band, and we can only imagine what an epic jam this would be live!

I love the diversity of the record, at times it’s all bombast, then there’s a jam and then it gets all mellow, you can imagine the light and shade of that live show!

An album for lovers of fine music. One of the best you’ll buy all year.
