SONGS FROM THE PAST FOR THE NEW GENERATION

If Emo-alt-punk-power-pop is your thing then The New Varsity has one of those sounds that is both instantly familiar yet fresh. They importantly also have the songs of the quality to set them aside from the pack. ‘Hangovers and Morning Afters’ has a lightness and catchiness that will make you listen on, and as the album progresses it’s a mixture of passion and pop power that wins out. Titles like ‘I Puked at the Fonda’ might be a young band’s take on nostalgia, but the title also sounds edgier than it actually is. This is not particularly heavy music, but in truth it’s so well constructed, that while not my usual cup of tea it passes the ‘wouldn’t turn it off if it came on the radio’ test.

In truth ‘The New Varsity’ is a band you can imagine bothering the radio with a collection like this. And on tracks like ‘One Last Thing’ and ‘Hear it Play’ there’s more than just Green Day pastiche. This is a band that has clear and obvious influences and yet still manages to sound refreshing. Our favourite ‘Silver Lining’ sums it all up really – this is music for the new generation of rock kids.

If you love bands like Green Day, Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World, Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday and  Brand New add The New Varsity to your list.
