no sting in this tail...

Perennial Rock Troopers The Scorpions revisit their hits without the electric guitar and the results are pretty mixed if we’re honest. The real question is though, why? After completing their ‘Final Farewell’ tour they played three shows in Athens for MTV and to be blunt this smells very much like a shameless Christmas cash-in (after all we’ve seen a few greatest hits releases by now).

Sonically this sounds perfect but to be honest some of the songs just don’t work, and at times you wonder if they are going for the ‘elevator music’ take on their catalogue. Now some bands of course are naturals at this format sadly the Scorpions aren’t - all that seems to happen is that the life gets sucked out of the songs.

Great classics like ‘Big City Nights’ and ‘Rock You Like a Hurricane’ instead of unpeeling hidden layers of emotion just don’t translate at all. You wonder the same with tracks like ‘Can’t Live Without You’ which loses that mad intensity and ‘Blackout’ is faintly ridiculous stripped of all that guitar.

Some songs of course fare far better – the newer material like ‘Sting in the Tail’ that opens the album for example stands up, but the real winners of course are the ballads – ‘Still Loving You’ and ‘Winds of Change’ as you might expect.

I imagine fans will love it just for the fact it’s new product but it’s not the best way to close the book.
