A SMOOTH ROAD

When a project comes together from the sparks of a conversation about the desire to hear more from ‘Snakes in Paradise’ singer Stefan Berggren then you know one aspect of that project is rock solid. When one of those having that conversation is Producer/Keyboardist Alessandro Del Vecchio then you can rest at ease. Add songwriting contributions from a who’s who of European Melodic rock and expectations are understandably high.

It’s fitting therefore that keys open up the album before a searing guitar kicks in followed by Berggren’s powerful vocal. ‘Wings of Hope’ is a solid and safe opener showcasing what Del Vecchio does best – searing melodies with keyboard-driven backbone. It’s our favourite of his tunes here but with the sweeping title track (which we wish could just have done a liitle more) and ‘Ain’t Gonna Give my Heart Away’ it has stiff competition.

What comes as the most pleasant surprise is the majesty of Berggren’s compositions. ‘Shooting Star’ has a wonderful melody and some great guitar, and the acoustic opening and huge riff of ‘Balloon’ works well offset by the more searching ‘Love’s Got a Hold on Me’.

If we have to pick highlights the list would have to include ‘Balloon’ just because of the vocal; but ‘Losing You’ comes close too. This is rich very Melodic and rock solid as you might well expect from Del Vecchio.
