NASHVILLE PUSSY

UP THE DOSAGE

JANUARY 2014

DAMN FINE PUSSY

I’ve heard some big calls over the years but the band calling their latest release ‘Up the Dosage’ their ‘Back in Black’ should at least gain everyone’s attention that loves their rock and ain’t too old to play it loud. The truth is that this probably is Nashville Pussy’s biggest sounding album to date.

5 years after their last album proper ‘From Hell to Texas’ (which got revamped a couple of years back) Nashville Pussy have pulled off one of the surprises of next year (this being released in January) and boy is it welcome.

Over the years Nashville Pussy has been one of those bands that have always seemed to just stop this side of greatness, always great live of course things never completely satisfied in the studio. Now all that’s changed with these 13 tracks of mayhem!

There’s some great stuff on here and opener ‘Everybody’s Fault But Mine’ is a fine lead off but it does little to prepare you for the song that follows – ‘Rub It To Death’ could just be the best song Nashville Pussy has ever recorded. Seriously listen to that one and weep.

As you might expect everything else is just not quite that good, but it tries so damn hard it almost makes it.  If you loved previous outing ‘From Hell To Texas’ then about half of the album has that same sort of vibe and intensity – check out songs like ‘Pillbilly Blues’ and ‘Pussy’s Not a Dirty Word’ for starters. If you want to see where the bands has tried something new check out the Stonsey ‘Before the Drugs wear Off’ or the Southern Rock of ‘Till the Meat Falls off the Bone’.

Title track ‘Up the Dosage’ is another slice of the South and a little more laid back, and ‘The South is Too Fat to Rise Again’ again takes that more restrained line and it suits them well. Taking it a little further still the wonderfully titled ‘Hooray For Cocaine, Hooray For Tennessee’ is great sleazy blues fuelled fun.

Don’t you love it when it all just works – this may not be their ‘Back In Black’ but it’s close and in the right light after the right amount of lubrication who knows…. One things for sure if 2014 starts out like this it’ll be a great year for Rock.
