horizontal blues...

Ian James Stewart is a guitarist, songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer, best known as the guitarist and main songwriter with Melodic Rockers Strangeways since the mid 80's. Here he looks backwards towards the kind of relaxed warm blues that has a very adult feel to it. It may be adult but it’s far from jazz-like pretention even though there are notes of bands like Steely Dan in there amongst the Zeppelin and co.

This is a very nice listen if you love a bit of blues and don’t mind whether it comes hot or cold. Easing in with a ‘safe’ title track that has shades of Strangeways seen through a bluesy sheen and laid back vocal it’s a solid if short opener.

From here on in the album opens out with folkier, dreamier numbers like ‘So Far So Good’ rubbing shoulders with the horizontal blues of ‘Big White Monkey’ which has shades of Bonamassa waking from a long sleep; and the ambience of jazzy bonus track ‘When You Love Somebody’.

It’s a great listen but if anything maybe a little too relaxed, so if ‘laid back’ is your thing, dig deep.
