IT'S REALLY NOT THAT GREAT BUT FANS WILL SWEAR THEY LOVE IT...

Being of a certain age Sabbath to me always meant the soaring power of Dio rather than the whine of Ozzy, and while no one, least of all me, can deny the all-enduring influence of Iommi’s Sabbath (the real genius along with Geezer Butler) Ozzy was to me just a horrible singer who just happened to have a distinctive sound and got a lot of attention. Still some people like his voice and I even forgave it on his early solo albums.

To be honest this album isn’t all bad. It isn’t classic Sabbath, but it could have been a helluva lot worse. From ‘End of the Beginning’ to ‘Pariah’ you are treated to an album that sounds like classic Sabbath only with the great production we expect these days. The difference is that hand on heart there’s nothing here that really flies, nothing that will take its place on a ‘Greatest Hits’ and to be blunt the best part of the album is listening to Iommi and Butler lay down a great soundscape for Ozzy’s tired and clichéd lyrics.

I don’t expect we’ll hear any more now that the cash register has chimed one final time. Fans of course will love it and it is certainly better than anything Ozzy has done in the last decade, but only just.
