DARK ENTRIES

DISCLAIMER: This album also appears as disc 5 in the recently released 5 CD Bauhaus Box Set.

I always laugh when I read about ‘Goth’ bands these days especially when those talking about them have no appreciation for those bands that laid the way for everyone. Bands like Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy and Germany’s incomparable Play Dead laid waste to us pale skinned teens in a dark and gloomy early eighties when music was still vibrant, still dark and still exciting. These were the days when bands valued art far more than shock and simply being louder and more extreme than the last would have been incredibly passé.

If you value the days of spikey hair, black eyeliner and pints of snakebite then Bauhaus should mean something to you. Never the most commercial or extreme there was a certain artiness about the band (yes like me they were art students) that allowed them to burn the box that few strayed outside of.
As well as the immortal ‘Bella Lugosi’s Dead’ (here we get the Tomb Raider mix) there are all the best of the band’s singles releases plus a few obscurities such as ‘Watch that Grandad Go’ and a possibly unnecessary ‘Spirit in the Sky’. It’s dark music from a time when the world was still full of excitement and innovation.
