scream for us

With a growled-out opener called ‘Music Media is My Whore’ that is little more than growled-word over riff, I would have expected something a little better to get away with a track with that title. Alselmo of course won’t be worrying about that, let’s face it who cares about the Music Industry and by extension the Music Media these days – the mainstream press is dead and bloated and in the pay of the remaining corporations and the rest is guys like us, love us or hate us we aren’t going away because for people like us it’s about the music. Listening to this I am pretty convinced it is for Phil too.

Don’t expect ‘Pantera’ or ‘Down’ here, this may be Phil’s most Metal release in some time, but it’s not all as cohesive as you might hope, fuelled by rage as it is. Philip is angry, he’s angry at  the music press, angry at society and angry at the government and most of all he lets it out on the album’s standout track ‘Betrayed’.

So where songs like ‘Betrayed’ and ‘Batallion of Zero’ and ‘Bedroom Destroyer’ win you over the album isn’t without its downside. What is most grating though about the album is the strange effects on the vocals which are consistent across the album – in places they add menace but in others they really grate.

As an album expect a lot of anger but don’t expect consistency. This is interesting but here the valleys are as deep as the mountains are high.
